Service Oriented Architecture

The real purpose of SOA is to make the business agile. Agility comes by leveraging existing Service assets and composing applications that can enable business to tap into newer markets. One of the agility principles is to make Service visible and flexible to be reuse at various levels.

A Service can have various degrees of re-use based on what functional area it addresses. We classify our services into four specific practices:

Multi-Enterprise: Indicates that the service or process could be reused both inside and outside of the enterprise (eg: trading partners, etc)

Enterprise: Indicates the service or process would potentially be reused across the enterprise.

LOB: Indicates the service would be reusable within a single Line of Business (LOB) across multiple applications

Application: Indicates the service would be reusable within a single application.

The real vision of SOA, generally shared by the lines of business, technology executives, and enterprise architects, centers on the benefits of these strategic services.  As such, when we mention services in an SOA, by default we are referring to strategic services.
